Philipp Mainlander (1841-1876), autodidacta integral y admirador de Schopenhauer, fue un pensador y escritor alemán que acabo tempranamente con su vida horas después de recibir el ejemplar recién publicado de su obra principal, La filosofía de la redención. En este tratado expone las tesis centrales de su pesimismo filosófico, donde concibe el origen del universo como la descomposición de un Dios que se destruyó a sí mismo, haciendo prevalecer su tendencia por no ser. A partir de esa pérdida, escenifica el cuadro de un universo en máxima crispación y tensión, donde las voluntades individuales de vivir luchan por la existencia y por alcanzar, en el caso del ser humano, la dicha suprema.
